At first, it is quite a mystery how this meter works and reads. The instructions are well-hidden inside the cardboard packaging, and easy to miss, or even toss. Unfortunately, the company's website has only half the instructions available in PDF. If you find the complete version on the web, they are still hard to read.Here is a quick summary that will allow you to use the meter:1. The sensors are on the top, not the front, so make sure the top is pointed at the light source.2. There are two bands on the meter: "Fluorescent" and "Sun & High Intensity". These correspond to the "500" and "5000" settings. So if you are using the 500 setting, read the Fluorescent band; if you are using the 5000 setting, read the Sun & High Intensity band.3. Whichever band you are reading, multiply it by 10.4. Footcandle is the amount of light cast upon a certain area. The amount of light your plants need is measured in footcandle hours. So for example, if you place the meter's sensors where your plants leaves are, on the 500 setting, and it registers about half-way on the scale ("25"), then your plants are getting 250 footcandles. If you leave the light on for 15 hours per day, then they will get 3,750 footcandles of light in that day.5. The first main confusion on the device's interface is the mismatch between the controller ("500/5000") and the readout ("Fluorescent/Sun"). The designers were trying to hint that if you are in sunlight, you need to use the 5,000 setting because the needle will go all the way to the right if you place it on the 500 setting. If you are using typical indoor lighting, then you need to use the 500 setting or else the needle will stay to the left and not register any light.6. The second main confusion is the use of "footcandle" without a clear explanation of the implications of that measure. In other words, how much is enough? The complete written instructions attempt to answer this question, but only by providing huge ranges (e.g, 15,000-37,500 footcandle hours), and then they provide different ranges for some of the same plants, like Coleus, which is listed in both 20K-50K, and also in 15K-37.5K. This is very unsatisfying. I would recommend using the meter to understand how much light you are providing to the plants under different conditions (e.g., adding/moving lights), and then use your own experience to determine whether that amount turned out to be too little, too much, or enough.Overall, once you figure it out, the meter seems to work okay.

One thing I should say right away to the people who think it doesn't work - this light meter is specifically meant for measuring light From light bulbs commonly used for INDOOR gardening, not being simply pointed at the sun. This thing got here sooner than the delivery estimate, and works excellently for very specific light measurements that actually are within 2% which is great for the price.If you need a nice cheap light meter, this one is easy to use and well worth it.The main reason people get confused is that you need a besic understanding of the different ways that light gets measured and how relevant it is for your indoor plants. Also the variety or strain of plant you're growing require varying amounts of light to properly photo synthesize.Hopefully my review is helpful to those on the fence about buying it. Mine works just fine, but Ive also been gardening for 13 years, so I didn't need the instructions. And the instructions I've seen in the reviews for this product just aren't right.

The meter is easy to use and simple. I just got into orchids and this tells me how much light I have in the rooms of my orchids.
