Kershaw has always been a great brand of knife for me. Quality products that are made in the USA are the name of Kershaws game. This ax, however, is not of US origin but its still got that Kershaw quality. The best thing about this ax is that its one solid made piece, no worries about losing hatchet heads while using it. Also the weight is fantastic compared to similarly sized hatchets. The only down side to this ax that I have found is the cheap plastic guard that comes with it. It works for practical purposes however so not a necessary replacement.

First this isn't made by Kershaw. Same hatchet has been sold under a few company names. As of this posting date it can also be found as "MTech camp axe" though with a different sheath.This "axe" is very small and light which has it's pros and cons, but most people buy it for that reason. It can be thrown it in a pack without a noticeable difference in your load. Not a high quality or highly efficient chopper, however, it is nimble and will get the job done in a pinch.It would be best described as a low cost survival hatchet. Sufficient to make shelter, but not a log cabin. It can bring down a tree, but would be seriously tedious and energy intensive. It can process wood to make a small fire, but I wouldn't want to use it to split my winter timber supply.The handle is somewhat thin, but sufficient for most hands. The texture on the grip is a bit too aggressive. I have hard rugged hands and it still rubs me a little raw if I do a lot of chopping. Needs to be used with a glove, smoothed a little with some sanding, or wrapped with baseball bat grip tape.Sheath will probably hold up for a while, but lacks long term frequent use durability. As it's used and resharpened, the blade gets smaller and thus the sheath fit will loosen. Bending the plastic by opening and closing it will eventually cause fatigue and failure.The cast steel is a little bit soft and requires sharpening more often, but it is sufficient to the limitations of it's size and design.An Estwing E14A would be a step up in strength, comfort, and quality. The only caveat being the stacked leather handle isn't as durable as the plastic on this one. An Estwing E24A (my personal preference) is a big step up in performance if you can take an extra 10oz's in weight.My final verdict on the "Kershaw" camp "axe"... It's a passable light weight survival hatchet to throw in your backpack for just in case scenarios. Also a low cost and fairly durable starter for younger bushcrafters who are prone to leaving tools out in the rain.

I purchased one of these as a gift for my brother. After seeing and using it, I added one to my personal wishlist. The grip and handle feel comfortable and ergonomic in my hand. The attached band allows you to secure the axe safely around your wrist to prevent slipping and hurtling the blade through the air. Comfortable to swing, most of the wait is in the head and makes chopping very smooth. The include plastic sheath could be a bit better quality, or replaced by a leather cover/sheath. My only real complaint is that there really isn't much of an edge on the blade out of the box. Needs a good sharpening.
