By I. Greenhouse
I was attracted to this shovel because it is 100% made in the USA. I didn't want a Chinese made shovel. Upon receipt, I was impressed: the 14 gauge blade noticeably thicker than the blades of lesser-quality shovels. However, I was ultimately disappointed when I used the shovel for the first time. I was digging around a tree stump, and the blade went under a root without my knowledge. When I tried to lift the shovel, the handle sheared off right at the end of the socket, just above the rivet point.Amazon replaced the shovel, but I'm going to be much more careful in how much torque I put on the handle in the future. I had to mail back the original shovel, for which I was reimbursed.)I went to Sears and Home Depot to examine other shovels, and I noticed that they all tend to have longer sockets, with the socket extending further up the shaft of the handle than on this shovel. It's true, as noted by an earlier reviewer, that the sockets on these other shovels are typically bent around the handle, with an open seam visible on the back, and that the Bully shovel socket is truly integral with the blade. But that was not sufficient to prevent this mode of failure. It seems to me that this sovel needs to have a longer socket above the rivet point for long-term durability. Also, it is interesting to note that the price for this item at Amazon changed significantly after my initial purchase. I purchased it for $18.41 with Amazon prime free 2-day shipping on October 12. When I called for replacement 10 days later, and now at the time of writing this review, the price is $44! Also, for some reason my replacement shovel did not ship by UPS but by CEVA Logistics, the shipper they use for large TVs. This required scheduling a delivery time.I'm not sure I would buy this shovel for $44. For $14.99 I can get a similar Craftsman shovel with a stronger looking socket from Sears. Or for $18.74 I can get a fiberglass handled Craftsman from Sears. Sure they are made in Mexico, but that still beats the heck out of supporting the Chinese.

By Consumer 1011100100
Most shovels are bent formed around the handle with a small gap where the two metal parts meet in the back. I have had a shovel break here by having the wood slip out of the groove. Annoyed I looked for one with a welded back. This one not only has a welded back, but they add a spine. It seems like a very solid shovel and made in USA to boot. I have only used it for a little bit though so time will tell the truth. So far so good. Keep in mind that bully sells a lot of their tools in three grades. Ash handle, red handle and blue handle. The red and blue have handles that are much stronger and made of fiberglass and wood. Additionally the blue handle one uses a higher gauge steel. Now you have the fruits of my web searching. I like the feel of wood so I got this one.
