By Trent
I bought a Coleman Camp Axe a year or so ago for camping and for mostly breaking down firewood into kindling. I bought it because it was cheap and had decent reviews. Overall that axe seemed fine, and for the price I suppose it is. However, I had to replace it. The cons with the Coleman are that it seems as thought the steel is soft--it shows major dents from hitting who knows what--and most importantly it doesn't come with any realistic sheath to protect the blade.I ended up buying this Gerber Axe based upon the fact it had all the features I wanted plus a plastic sheath to protect it. I've used it now on one camping trip, and I have to say I love it. It seems to be an almost perfect tool. No comparison to the Coleman at all.Pros:* perfectly weighted--feels great to swing and powerful for the size.* cuts wood very well right out of the box. I think the weight of the head helps with this.* the sheath is great. It's a rigid plastic sheath with a handle and lock function so it can't come out. Seems sturdy.* there is a flare to the blade so that it goes wider than the handle. Based upon reviews of the first generation of this axe I was concerned wood splinters might go under the handle. This flare makes that pretty much impossible, so no concerns at all. It also helps break the wood faster.Cons:* None? There's an option with a saw in that seems kind of nice..NOTE: This is the second generation of the Gerber Camp Axe. There are others on Amazon that are the first generation and I think not as good. BUY THIS ONE.

By flashalan
This new style camp axe II is great. Solidly built, good weight, and swings with power. The balance is weight forward in the head giving you powerful chops. My copy is made in Finland by Fiskars as stamped right on the head.Gerber 31-000914 Camp Axe II High Performance AxeIt has an incredible working temperature range +120 -58 degrees. I will be using it during average temps. One consideration is, being plastic don't leave it near a fire to avoid any problems that's common sense. The head design is new in so much that it has a ridge near the wrap to help protect the wrap during use.The handle is comfortable with the bottom portion having a grippy surface. I can get a two handed swing when extra power is needed..The handle is straight which I believe makes it more accurate than some curved handles.Hey it's an axe that is meant to be used. I have several other axes too and if this one was out before I bought my Small forest axe I would have gotten it instead. It is actually a better performing axe than the GB SFA that I own and I would have saved a lot of cash. I like the SFA don't get me wrong it has admirable qualities. The steel is excellent what I would call resilient as witnessed on this and other Fiskars axes I own. and there is nothing wrong with the head as previously stated in other reviews.I find myself grabbing this axe first because of it's power to size. Comes in at around 36ozs without sheath not to heavy to pack or to light to get the job done. Some say if the head or handle breaks then what? Sure you can replace the handle on most other traditional axes but it will cost you. Yeah yeah yeah you can make your own but seriously most don't. The handle on this axe is tough and will take some serious use. I think it would have to be extreme misuse or a freaky thing to bust one. I'm not saying it won't break but highly unlikely under normal use. Your mileage will vary...Well it has a lifetime warranty get a new one.For those of you using wood handled axes carry on more power to you. Plenty of axes to choose from in fact over the last few years everybody and their brother is getting in on the bandwagon. Boutique axes in fancy packaging are all the rage now. Phewwwy!I have some vintage axes also and they are great and have their own distinct personalities. This review is about a modern technology, mass produced, high quality axe that's available cheap.SUMMARY Are you looking for a quality, camp axe that will split above it's weight, make kindling, carve wood up and do other camp chores like bushcrafting all at a low price. Get this axe you won't be disappointed. You won't find a better axe in this class range especially at this price point either that has a lifetime warranty...

By Dusty
I loved the smaller version of this axe so much I had to buy it. It is sharp out of the package and keeps a good sharp edge. It makes quick work of small to medium trees and saves a lot of time with shelter building and collecting fire wood. The only complaint I have is the sheath is lacking in durability but the quality of the axe makes up for it. I will probably try to make a leather one.
